Written Statement
For this assignment I wanted to incorporate in my design different things I like, symbols that are significant to me, and characterizes me.
To start off, the first thing you notice in the screenprint design is an owl, to be exactly a Barn Owl. Owls symbolize Wisdom, Change, Transformation, Intuitive Development, and Trusting the Mystery (out of various other things). Since I was little, I’ve always been atracted to owls from their elegance, beauty, and later on symbolism in various books and media. You can see owls being part of my life through my various regalia of them in my room, including in my personal logo as a graphic designer.
The second thing that you should notice is the shape of the entire subject, which if you couldn’t notice from now is an Orquid. Orquids are my favorite type of flower, additional to how hard they are to maintain and keep alive. They symbolize love, beauty, refinement, charm, and many children/fertility.
The patterns in some of the petals of the Orquid represent different landscapes in Earth; sky, land, and ocean. Indicating my love for nature and my eco-lifestyle aesthetic I try to maintain. They can as well represent the different landforms I have lived on. Ocean (Puerto Rico), Forest/Rainforest (Puerto Rico & North Carolina), Mountains (North Carolina), Valley/ Plains (Texas & Florida), and Sky (EVERYWHERE).
The colour choices represent my character. A lot of Blue and cool colours representing giving this aesthetic to the print that is in a night setting, meaning my characteristic of being an introvert and a Night Owl, working better at afternoon/ nights. Yellow to warm colours representing my bright, positive, and charismatic behavior/characteristic. Additionally, blue and yellow both being one of my favorite colors.
Lastly, the style of the design itself, vector flat illustrations. Flat illustrations were a type of style I have always wanted to start illustrating and incorporate more into my work. They are simple, creative, cute, and have a very clean aesthetic.
