For this assignment I wanted to talk a bit more political against the puertorican government’s decision in not wanting to rebuild the famous blue adoquines from El Viejo San Juan because they are more expensive to re-construct.
Recently when I went to Puerto Rico, I was with my friend walking on the streets of El Viejo San Juan, in where I realized that I was walking fine, without breaking an ankle, in the streets. And then I realize that it was because there was smooth asphalt than the bumpy blue adoquines. I then ask my friend why they are not just re-constructing the blue adoquines, since they are very old; she continues to say that they cost more expensive to fix than to just destroy and put concrete. This is a landmark, culture, and history we are covering, this is what makes El Viejo San Juan different from the other colonial cities around the America’s and the Caribbean.
After this, it has made me become more aware of where I am walking or stepping on. This is the ground that has made me who I am, gave me the characteristics and personality that makes me Alexandra Pedraza, a woman born and raised from the small island of Puerto Rico. I then went through old pictures from my albums and went into an online search of tiles I remember seeing and walking on in my life, from schools, old houses, etc.
It is never too late to revisit our past and see what made us who we are currently...but let’s never forget to look down and become aware of where we are stepping at. You never know if the ground beneath you today will be there tomorrow.
